Europe warns about lifting sanctions against Yanukovich’s officials

On Jan. 20 this year, the European External Action Service (EEAS) forwarded a letter to the government of Ukraine and law enforcement agencies warning them about lifting sanctions against a number of former Ukrainian officials.

This is stated by deputy head of the Poroshenko Bloc Party faction, lawmaker Mustafa Naiiem on his Facebook page, Censor.NET reports.

"Among the specified names there are persons sanctioned in accordance with the decrees of the EU Council #2014/119/CFSP and #2014/216/CFSP: Serhii Kliuiev, Dmytro Tabachnyk, Olena Lukash, Viktor Yanukovych (Jr.), Oleksandr Yakymenko, Ihor Kalinin, Oleksii Azarov.

"If additional information regarding their crimes is not provided in the near future, the EEAS will be forced to exclude these people from the sanctions list.

"According to the report, the weakest position of the Ukrainian law enforcement agencies is in regard to the accusations against Oleksandr Yakymenko, Ihor Kalinin and Mykola Azarov.

"In regard to Oleksandr Yanukovych the information about the associated relation of his income and dividends to the office of his father has not yet been provided. The EEAS indicates that data from open sources, including investigative journalism is sufficient for the extension of sanctions; it needs to be officially submitted to the European services.

"It is separately stated that they expect specific actions of the law enforcement agencies in relation to people's deputy Serhii Kliuiev. The letter directly expressed bewilderment as to why the Prosecutor General's Office has not yet initiated lifting of Kliuiev's parliamentary immunity having the existing evidence base. (According to my information, such remedial action order has been prepared at the time when PGO was headed by Vitalii Yarema; why it was not submitted to the management of the Verkhovna Rada is unclear).

"For all the above mentioned cases the EEAS provided Ukraine with additional time to collect data. It is separately reported on broadening the charges base sufficient to extend the sanctions. The sanctions will be extended not only due to charges of misappropriation of state property, but also due to charges of abuse of office.

"I have already sent an inquiry to the Prosecutor General's Office regarding all the above mentioned issues. The answer will be published here, " Naiiem wrote.
