Philip Breedlove: Over 1,000 pieces of military hardware already sent from Russia to Ukraine

Over 1,000 pieces of Russian military equipment including tanks, armored personnel carriers, heavy artillery pieces, and other military vehicles, have already crossed the Ukrainian border.

The conflict initiated by Russia in eastern Ukraine, is global and enduring in nature, said Air Force Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, commander of U.S. European Command, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and Allied Command Operations for NATO after hearings in the US House of Representatives on Wednesday, February 25, Ukrinform reports.

Europe faces a different and more challenging security environment than it did just a year ago, including an increasingly aggressive Russia and a surge of violent extremism. It is “the challenge, which is global, not regional, and enduring, not temporary”, he stressed.

He noted that today there is very convincing evidence that Russian artillery pieces crossed the border of Eastern Ukraine at the early stages of the conflict, that more than 1,000 pieces of military equipment was transferred to the Ukrainian territory, including tanks, APCs, heavy artillery pieces, and other military vehicles.

“They have been used on the front lines against Ukrainian forces,” Gen. Breedlove stressed.

He said that these actions do not contribute to restoration of normal relations.

The actions of Russia are what matter now, not words. “What we see on the ground is a revanchist Russia that does not play by international rules or norms. Their activities are destabilizing to neighboring states … and have a global impact,” General said.

We remind that on February 12 leaders of Ukraine, France, Germany and Russia agreed on ceasefire in Donbas since February 15. However, a new Minsk ceasefire agreement is constantly violated. In particular, pro-Russian rebels and troops of Russia continued their advance on the town of Debaltseve, Donetsk region.

Meanwhile, Russia claims it is not bound by any commitments under Minsk agreements, as the country is just their “guarantor”, not a participant.
