Ukraine appeals to UN for deployment of peacekeepers

Ukraine has made an official request to the United Nations to deploy UN peacekeepers in the Donbas.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yevgeniy Perebiynis said it on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

According to Perebiynis, the composition and number of the future mission will be agreed during talks with the United Nations.

"A preliminary application was sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Another one will be sent to the organization after the decision is approved by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine," he said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on March 2 Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree to enact the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of February 18 "On an appeal to the United Nations and the European Union on the deployment of an international peacekeeping and security mission on the territory of Ukraine."

However Russia, which is a veto-wielding member of the United Nations Security Council, recently said it would not support the deployment of a peacekeeping force in eastern Ukraine.
