Andrei Bastunets elected new BAJ head
Andrei Bastunets

The 9th report and election convention of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) was held in Minsk.

Andrei Bastunets, 48, a former deputy head, was elected chairman of the Belarusian Association of Journalists, an organisation with 1,500 members, BelaPAN reports.

He was the only candidate. He was proposed as a candidate by Zhanna Litvina, who has headed the organisation since it was founded in 1995. Litvina called Bastunets “conscience of the organisation, a person you can always rely on”.

Four deputy heads were elected – Sviatlana Kalinkina (Narodnaya Volia newspaper), Mikhail Yanchuk (Belsat TV), Aliaksandr Starykevich (Solidarity online newspaper) and Alina Suravets (BAJ). All of them, except for Yanchuk, were deputy heads before.

It became known ahead of the convention that Zhanna Litvina chose not to propose herself as a candidate for the post of the BAJ head.
