Ales Bialiatski and Hungarian politicians discuss repression in Belarus
Ales Bialiatski

Bialiatski, the Vice President of the International Federation for Human Rights and former political prisoner, spoke in Budapest about human rights violations in Belarus.

State secretary of the department for European and international affairs at the Ministry of Human Capacities of Hungary Gergely Prőhle and former foreign minister and European Commissioner responsible for regional policy Péter Balázs, who currently heads the Center for EU Enlargement Studies, met with Ales Bialiatski on May 11, Viasna human rights centre reports.

UN Special Rapporteur on Belarus Miklós Haraszti took part in the meeting. “The very fact of the meeting deserves attention, because representatives of Belarusian civil society haven't met with Hungarian politicians for a long time,” Viasna notes.

Ales Bialiatski, Miklós Haraszti and Péter Balázs also participated in a round table discussion “Human Rights in Belarus: Has Minsk changed?” organised by the Central European University of Budapest that promotes the development of an open society in Central and Eastern Europe, including former Soviet countries.
