Ukraine’s Minister of Ecology: Fire near Chernobyl could have been set by Russia’s saboteurs

One of the probable causes of the large-scale fire, which broke out in the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, could have been an act of sabotage committed by Russians.

This opinion was expressed by Ecology and Natural Resources Minister of Ukraine, Ihor Shevchenko, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“We have directed an inquiry to the Interior Affairs Ministry. They are investigating the reasons, whether it had been a mere accident or not. To my mind, many things indicate it could have been an act of sabotage. You know, lots of fires had been taking place in the neighbouring country, and they had to divert attention. Another version: with the help of arson there was an attempt to conceal illegal logging,” he said.

We remind that on April 28 a forest fire started in the forest estate land “Chernobyl pushcha” in the exclusion zone near the villages Buryakovka, Rudnya-Ilyinetskaya, Glinka, Lubyanka of Ivankovski district, at the territory of 320 ha. The fire was put under control on May 2.
