Ukraine assists Poland with power supplies

As an emergency assistance to Poland facing a difficult situation with power supplies due to an abnormally hot weather, on September 1, Ukraine started electricity export to the neighboring country.

"Currently, the 220 kW power line Dobrotvorska TPP-Zamość is transmitting 135 MW at a maximum technical capacity of 235 MW," national energy company Ukrenergo reported.

The company noted that the power line was put into operation on September 1 at 12:00 in accordance with the tripartite agreement on electricity supplies from Ukraine to Poland.

At the same time, Ukrenergo emphasized that the company's priority is to ensure balance and reliability of Ukrainian energy system.

As reported earlier, in September 2014 Ukraine restricted export of electricity by 50% due to lack of thermal coal, much of which is produced in a combat zone in the east of the country. The export of electricity to Poland was suspended.

Operators of Polish and Ukrainian power grids signed an agreement on August 17 on supplies of electricity to Poland.

On August 13, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk instructed the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry to take urgent measures to ensure the maximum technically feasible supply of electric power to the power system of Poland in connection with the difficult situation which occurred in the country associated with the ongoing heatwave.
