Charter'97 chief editor receives death threats
Natalia Radzina

The chief editor of Charter'97 receives death threats from the participants of opposition rallies who are thought to be secret agents.

Representatives of the human rights community Territory of Rights were the first to report that Mikita Nahlin and Tamara Balakina, the persons who attended the opposition rally on September 23, are probably police officers or secret agents. Journalists trust information of the community, because its activists cooperate with Viasna human rights centre, which posts the community's banner on its website.

Human rights defenders wrote that these persons always appear at the end of opposition rallies and provoke conflicts. This information was later posted by other media (which later removed it without retraction). Nevertheless, Nasha Niva newspaper writes today that its journalists saw that “Nahlin tries to be near opposition leaders during rallies and tries to start a conversation with them even if they are talking with journalists.”

After the article with necessary links was published on charter97.org, chief editor Natalia Radzina received threats from Mikita Nahlin on Facebook: “Bless yourself, b*tch! You will repeat the fate of medieval witches”, “Radzina, rotten b*tch, you and your pups will account for everything. My advice to you: remain in your Poland and don't return home!”

Except for threats, the website hasn't received any requests to remove the article or retract the information published in the article.

“The website charter97.org always faces hate campaigns, threats, summonses to courts and criminal cases ahead of 'elections'. Three criminal cases were launched against us during the previous 'election campaign', journalists received threats, our office in Minsk was raided, charter97.org founder Aleh Biabenin was killed, and I was jailed. So, I take the threats of the man who introduces himself as Nahlin more than seriously. It is a surprise that certain so called independent media have launched a hate campaign against Charter instead of showing journalists' solidarity. I can assure that we will continue doing our work and writing the truth about events in Belarus,” Natalia Radzina said.
