Belarus number one Victoria Azarenka, ranked 16th in the world, failed to reach the semifinal of the 2016 Australian Open.

In the quarters Victoria Azarenka was surprisingly knocked out by German 6th seed Angelique Kerber, whom the Belarusian beat in the previous six encounters. After the game Azarenka said she did a little bit too many unforced errors in the key moments.

Kerber raced into an early 4-0 lead and then staged a superb second-set fightback to beat two-time champion for the first time. On her way to the 2016 Australian Open quarterfinal Victoria Azarenka secured the double bagel against World No.43 Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium 6-0, 6-0, took a solid win over World No.54 Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-1, 6-2, cruised pass Japan's Naomi Osaka (World No.127) in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, and defeated Czech 48th seed Barbora Strycova 6-2, 6-4.

Victoria Azarenka is a two-time winner of the Australian Open (2012, 2013). Angelique Kerber will next face Britain's Johanna Konta (World No.47) who beat China's Zhang Shuai (133) 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinal. Top seed of the United States will take on Poland's 4th seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the second semifinal. In the men's singles draw world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia will play against Switzerland's 3rd seed Roger Federer. It will be their 45th meeting on court, with each holding 22 wins.
