KGB Summons Activist For Conversation Regarding “Elections” Observation
VADZIM BABIN

The movement “For Freedom!” activist gets threatened with expulsion from a college in Minsk, 4 months before graduation.

Member of the movement “For Freedom!” Vadzim Babin has told about the threats of expulsion from Minsk state technological college from the side of the KGB officers, at the movement’s website.

Babin claims that, at about midday on October 25, he was called to the principal’s office, where a man who introduced himself as a KGB officer asked him about his participation in the marathon in Kyiv in the movement “For Freedom!” squad, as well as his participation in the “elections” observation. The man ordered the activist to terminate his membership in the movement “For Freedom!” under the threat of expulsion (it’s four months before the graduation).

“He showed no documents, but he knew everything so I had no doubts he was from the KGB,” – Babin has told Radio Liberty. – He asked about my position, whether I planned to participate in the movement further on. He threatened they would expulse me, but I will not quit the movement.”

The college principal Mikalai Tsyrelchuk confirmed that the conversation had taken place in his presence, but claimed it had not concerned expulsion and it wasn’t a KGB man. He refused to tell who it was and what they talked about though.

“No one introduced themselves during this conversation; no one asked about the student’s political activity of threatened him with expulsion. I can tell you this for sure as I was there,” – Tsyrelchuk has said. – I could have threatened my student with expulsion if he missed classes or had unsatisfactory grades. However, he is a good student. I can tell he is one of the best students in his group! He attends all classes. Expulsion is out of the question. I don’t know what he imagined here.”
