Italian Ecologists: Belarus Hasn’t Drawn Lesson From Chernobyl

On the eve of Lukashenka’s visit to Italy ecologists of this country ask Italian president not to forget the topic of Chernobyl.

Besides, environmentalists also express concern over the incident during construction of Astravets NPP.

“It seems that the dramatic history of this country, its lessons related to nuclear power, has not been sunk in,” – Radio Svaboda quotes the statement of the ecologic organisation Solidarietà di Legambiente, which among other things is involved in aid to the persons affected by Chernobyl disaster.

Stefano Ciafani, the director of the ecologic organisation Cigno Verde, said:

“Even today 1,141,000 persons in Belarus, 217,000 of which are children, are living in contaminated areas. The levels of contamination remain high, even in food products, which causes weakening of immune system, cancer, leukemia, other diseases, especially among children.

Solidarietà di Legambiente also draws attention to the fact that Lithuania is concerned over construction of Astavets NPP. According to Lithuanian authorities, there is a danger of release of radioactive material there.
