Cuban Dissident Went On Hunger Strike Demanding To Put End To Repressions
GUILLERMO FARIÑAS

On Tuesday, July 19, legendary Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas was detained and severely beaten in Cuba.

Laureate of the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize “For Freedom of Thought” Fariñas and his Common Anti-Totalitarian Forum associates were captured by the Cuban political police, when they were on their way to the police station in Santa Clara Province, to find out about the destiny of their arrested colleague.

Fariñas was handcuffed and pushed into a police car, where they started strangling him. He was beaten, though he offered no resistance. They threatened to kill him if he did not stop his activities. Then he was dragged out of the car and left handcuffed under the hot sun.

Following the attack, Guillermo Fariñas wrote a letter to the Cuban ruler Raul Castro, demanding to put an end to repressions against the non-violent opposition and begin a dialogue with them. He announced a hunger strike, demanding Raul Castro to promise publicly to stop the beatings, torture and other methods of intimidation and threats against the Cuban non-violent opposition.
