SSU Unveils Peculiarity Of Its Sea Drones

Ukraine is armed with sea drones Sea Baby and Mamai.

The SSU's maritime drones have no analogues in the West and are invisible to enemy detection systems. The SSU currently has sea drones Sea Baby and Mamay in service.

The SSU speaker Artem Dekhtyarenko said this, RBC-Ukraine reports with a reference to the telethon broadcast.

“In 2022, there was no alternative in the world to the SSU’s attack naval drones. Existing Western drones were large and unmaneuverable, and could easily be detected by enemy radars. In addition, Western drones did not have a warhead, because they were used for logistics or reconnaissance,” said the SSU representative.

Therefore, according to Dekhtyarenko, the SSU decided to develop the concept of their own marine attack drone, which was supposed to operate in the noise range at the border of two environments — water and air.

“It is precisely because of its small size that hydroacoustics cannot hear it from below, and radars do not notice it from above. Moreover, the drone body is made of radio-absorbing material. This concept fully confirmed its stealth and striking power during the operations that the SSU carried out together with the Navy. Such drones can only be seen visually, and not on a surveillance system,” he said.

In total, as the SSU representative said, these naval drones hit 11 Russian ships, as well as the Crimean Bridge, which the Russian Federation used to supply weapons for the war. The cost of the SSU drones is estimated at 8.5 million hryvnias, while the Russian ships they destroy cost several tens of millions of dollars.

“We, of course, cannot disclose all the technical characteristics, but we can note that these are new generations of drones, which we continue to improve. For example, the 2024 Sea Baby is a new generation drone that is even deadlier. It is capable of delivering almost a ton of explosives over 1,000 kilometers. The SSU can reach a target almost anywhere in the Black Sea,” Dekhtyarenko added.
