Shoigu’s Deputy Placed In Pre-Trial Detention Center
TIMUR IVANOV

Another person involved in the case was arrested along with him.

The Basmanny Court of Moscow sent Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Timur Ivanov, accused of receiving a bribe on an especially large scale, to a pre-trial detention center until June 23, the press service of the court reported.

“The request of the preliminary investigation authorities was satisfied, and a preventive restraint was chosen with regard to Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Ivanov in the form of detention for a period of 2 months, until June 23, 2024,” the message says.

Ivanov was charged under Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (receiving a bribe on an especially large scale). According to investigators, he entered into a criminal conspiracy with third parties to commit a crime — receiving an especially large bribe in the form of providing services of a property nature during contracting and subcontracting work for the needs of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Together with him, another person involved in the case, Sergei Borodin, was placed under arrest. He was charged under a similar article.

As law enforcement agencies told TASS, Ivanov was detained at his workplace. He pleaded innocent.

“Borodin, being on friendly terms with the Deputy Defense Minister of the Russian Federation, Ivanov, who oversaw the construction and major repairs of Ministry of Defense facilities, entered into a criminal conspiracy with third parties,” the court’s press service added.

Ivanov became deputy head of the Ministry of Defense in May 2016. He now faces up to 15 years in prison.

At the military department, he oversaw issues related to property management and quartering of troops, housing and medical support for the army. He was also responsible for construction work, major repairs of Russian Ministry of Defense facilities and military mortgages.

Ivanov is the richest security official in 2019 according to Forbes. At the end of 2018, the publication estimated his family’s income at 136.7 million rubles.

According to the Anti-Corruption Foundation, Ivanov used kickbacks to build himself dachas in Rublyovka and Tver. The construction was carried out by military contractors.
