Belarusian Foreign Ministry goes into hysterics

The resolution of the European parliament is aimed at destabilization of the economic situation in the country and contravenes international laws norm, the Foreign Ministry of Belarus states.

“The sponsors of the resolution are trying to take advantage of the global financial crisis to destabilize the economic situation in the country. In fact, they call for measures which are aimed at undermining the stability of the Belarusian society and welfare of people,” the commentary of the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Andrei Savinykh on the European Parliament’s resolution reads.

“The European Parliament champions measures of political and economic pressure on Belarus, which are aimed at inflicting direct damage to our country, which is in violation of all norms of international law,” the Foreign Ministry representative underlines.

Savinykh believes that “the European Parliament reproduces and imposes on all far-fetched, aloof and warped interpretations of the Belarus developments.”

He reiterated the position of Minsk which is as following: if the economic measures are adopted by the EU, “the Belarusian side will be forced to take retaliatory steps.”

“They will constitute an adequate response aimed primarily at the individuals and organizations that are active generators of anti-Belarusian actions,” Savinykh said in his commentary.

Meanwhile, the Belarusian side states it is ready for reopening a constructive, in their interpretation, dialogue. “At the same time, we will step up efforts to return to constructive cooperation. We are convinced that the philosophy of pressure and confrontation demonstrated by the European Parliament has no chance to live in the longer term,” Andrei Savinykh concluded.

As said by him, Minsk is taking steps to re-establish the dialogue with the EU, but they face Europe’s incomprehension.

“Our efforts are made at return to a constructive dialogue, but they encounter ultimatums and threats, which are presented as a principled stand,” the representative of the Foreign Ministry stressed.

In general, the Foreign Ministry finds the approaches of the European Parliament unacceptable and contradicting principles of good neighbourhood practices, Savinykh concluded.

As it has been informed, on Thursday at the plenary session in Strasbourg the European Parliament adopted a resolution stating that the charges against the ex-candidates are illegal and unacceptable. During the discussion on the drafts of the resolution on Belarus, MEPs harshly criticized Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, and called it the last dictatorship in Europe. It was stated that there are no signs this regime would change by itself in the nearest years, so there is no other way of dealing with it except exerting constant pressure on it, including the use of economic sanctions.

The European Parliament demands to free from accusations the presidential candidates Andrei Sannikov, Vital Rymasheuski, Uladzimer Nyaklyaeu, Mikalai Statkevich, Dzmitry Uss.

The European deputies condemn the failure to respect the fundamental rights for freedom of expression and freedom of assembly by the Belarusian authorities, and call them for the immediate and unconditional release of all protesters still under custody and for dropping all charges against them.
