Lucky dictatorship or weak Europe?

Belarus can think that it is lucky, as the European Union has not ruptured relations with it because of persistent relations against opposition, said Radoslaw Sikorski, Polish Foreign Minister.

“Belarusian authorities must appreciate the fact that they have not been thrown away from the Eastern Partnership, considering all the things they were doing after December 19,” stated the Polish minister. The next summit of the Eastern Partnership is planned for September 29-30. addressing the meeting, organized by the Centre of European Politics in Brussels, Sikorski made it clear that though Lukashenka is unlikely to be invited to the summit, however presence of a representative of his regime is possible.

“At this stage we are discussing the question: at which level Belarus will be represented at Warsaw summit, and if Lukashenka would not do something very bad again, we shall invite someone,” Sikorski said.

The Polish Minister repeated European appeals to Belarus to release political prisoners and move in the direction of democracy. If that happened, Sikorski added, the European Union “would be ready to generously meet the needs of Belarus, caused by the collapse of “Lukanomika”.
