Aleh Myatselitsa: “Attention from Belarusian special services is a reality”

The head of the Belarusian political office in Lithuania Aleh Myatselitsa says that representatives of the office really feel attention on the part of Belarusian special services.

He also believes that representatives of Belarusian secret services could be involved in stealing of his money and documents from his own car, Vyasna human rights centre informs.

“Before Christmas my passport, money, other documents including car documents were stolen from my car in Vilnius,” Aleh Myatselitsa says. “A window was broken and things stolen. They have not been found till now. I do not exclude that it could be someone from secret services, as not only money but also documents were taken, and usual thieves are not interested in them,” Aleh said.

As said by him, other office team members also feel heightened attention:

“Other employees of our mission also feel intense interest on the part of some mysterious persons. By the way, four persons work full time in our office, and two more activists help us from time to time. When I talked to Lietuvos Rytas reporter, I mentioned 20 persons. I meant that about 20 activists of Belarusian democratic organizations have permanent residence in Vilnius. They had to flee from Belarus to avoid persecution on political grounds. He just misunderstood me,” Aleh said.

Besides, Aleh Myatselitsa does not exclude that now he would have to seek political asylum in Lithuania. Earlier the political activist said that he was to return to his motherland soon.

“In order to restore my passport, I have to go to Belarus, however, to my mind, and as my friends think, it is rather dangerous under present conditions. So most likely I would have to seek political asylum,” Aleh Myatselitsa said.

During the election campaign in 2010 the public activist from the settlement of Byalynichy Aleh Myatselitsa took an active part in the campaign of the presidential candidate Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu, he was his agent. After the crackdown on the protest rally on the Square on December 19, 2010 he and a few other activists of Nyaklyaeu’s campaign headquarters left first for Russia, and then to Lithuania. In Vilnius he and several other refugees was actively engaged in founding a political office of Belarus in Lithuania, organized different protest rallies in support of Belarusian political prisoners. Now Aleh Myatselitsa is the head of this office.
