Migalski: EU policy in Belarus always lacked consistency

Such an opinion has been expressed by a deputy of the European parliament Marek Migalski.

In an interview to the Polish Radio the European PM noted that up until recently only immediate neighbours took interest in Belarus, and major countries paid no attention to it, in order not to mar relations with Russia. Marek Migalski supposed that after creation of the European diplomatic service the policy of the EU would become more well-advised and stable, however that could not be guaranteed yet.

He also subjected to criticism the current policy of Poland towards Belarus.

- I am rather critical to the policy carried out inside Belarus by its present government. Over this period a dramatic deterioration of the human rights situation has taken place in Belarus, -- Migalski said. – All the efforts sincerely used by the Polish government have not desired effect, if anything. It means that the instruments used by Poland are ineffective.

The range of means of influence on the Belarusian authorities is limited, but it should be used more effectively. Then it would bring better results, the European MP is convinced. At the same time he hopes that Lukashenka would realize the necessity to turn towards Europe.

“If he is facing a dilemma with whom he should connect his policy and economy, with Europe or with Russia, let him look at where the standards of living and level of technologies is higher. I think he is a rather crafty politician to understand that the guarantees given by the European Union are much stronger than those given by Medvedev and Putin,” Migalski said.
