Freedom Day demonstration to march from Academy of Science to Bangalore Square

At the yesterday’s session the organizing committee for celebration of the Freedom Day (March 25) decided that this year the march is to be held along the route the Academy of Science – Bangalore Square, “Nasha Niva” writes.

“We have adopted a compromise decision. In order to satisfy the most radical ones, and those who want to feel safe,” the leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka said.

However, in recent years there were such cases when demonstrators did not move anywhere from the Academy of Sciences, and held the meeting there.

The director of Yakub Kolas lyceum, Uladzimir Kolas, the chairman of the Council of Intellectuals, has been elected the chairman of the organizing committee. Ivonka Survilla is a honorary chairperson.

To the question about the route of the rally, Uladzimir Kolas answered: “We have done some groundwork, but we have not decided anything concrete, we are going to meet on Wednesday for additional discussion. We shall announce everything publicly on Thursday at a press-conference.”

Anatol Lyabedzka believes that if all problems are solved by tomorrow, it would be possible to file an application to Minsk city executive committee at once. The United Civil Party, “Tell the Truth!”, “European Belarus”, the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, the Council of Intellectuals have taken part in the work of the organizing committee.

The Belarusian Popular Front Party and “For Freedom” movement were not represented by anyone at the session. “I hope it is a flu virus, and not a political virus,” Lyabedzka said.

The chairman of the United Civil Party is not frightened by accusations that the march will take place at Bangalore Square. “No one hinders people simply to come to the Academy of Sciences. The main thing is for as many people as possible to gather. When dozens of people in Russia assembles, they were beaten. When dozens thousands started to come, they started to be respected,” Lyabedzka said.

The Freedom Day is celebrated on the day when the Belarusian People’s Republic was proclaimed in 1918. Every year street rallies under white-red-white flags are held on this day. This year the Freedom Day is on Sunday.
