UCP denied premised for congress

On March 19 the leadership of the United Civil Party received a letter from the Belarusian Union of Consumers’ Societies.

It is stated there that because of the upcoming replacement of windows there is no opportunity to give the premises for the United Civil Party Congress. Radio Svaboda has been informed about that by the chairperson of the party’s executive committee Axana Kryshchanovich:

“We have received letters from a half out of 12 organizations which we addressed with a request to lodge our party congress. And all the answers were in the negative. We have written a letter to Minsk city executive committee and the Justice Ministry of Belarus, and informed them that holding our party forum is under a threat.”

Axana Kryshchanovich says that an assembly hall for at least 200 seats is necessary for the party congress: there will be 170 delegates plus guests and journalists. Delegates are going to approve the strategy of the party and elect the new party leadership.

The UCP was founded in 1995. Its first chairman was Stanislau Bahdankevich. He remains an Honorary Chairman until now. Since 2000 the party is headed by Anatol Lyabedzka.
