Brest democrats: Taking part in the ”election” is immoral and destructive

The coalition Spadchyna urges to boycott of the “parliamentary election”.

The Brest Democratic Coalition Spadchyna has made the following statement:

“We, members of the organizations who have signed this statement, hold on to our decision to boycott the so-called “parliamentary election” of 2012. We firmly believe that the boycott is a forced but only National strategy of influencing the illegitimate power that rules in Belarus.

Election as the people’s instrument of the transfer of power ceased to exist in Belarus in July 1994. In 1995-1999 the Parliament and some of its representatives, including the legitimate chairperson of the Election Committee, have been destroyed. The world community did not recognize the results of the elections organized by the powers in 2001-2010 because of numerous violations and falsifications. Today in Belarus we witness repressions, illegally condemned presidential candidates, human rights activists, politicians are in prison.

We find it immoral and destructive for the society to take part in this farce of “Belarusian election” under these conditions.

On 26 March 2012, within the Brest Democratic Coalition Spadchyna, we participated in the organization committee of the campaign For Fair Election among eleven other political and trade union organizations of the Brest region. It was announced that the form of participation in the campaign (for example, boycott or education of observers) was free. Nevertheless, the Belarusian People’s Front, the Belarusian Social-Democratic Party Gramada, the Left Party Fair World, and the United Civil Party already broke the principles of the campaign during a session on 31 March 2012.

In this regard the Brest Democratic Coalition Spadchyna proclaims the following:

The campaign For Fair Election is an instrument forged by the organizations controlled by the regime in order to drag the civil society into the legitimating process of the “chamber” and to ultimately isolate governance of the country from the people of Belarus. To take part in this campaign is to become an accomplice of a future crime.

All members of the Brest Democratic Coalition Spadchyna leave the organization committee of For Fair Election and proclaims its further operation in the Brest region illegitimate.

The Brest Democratic Coalition Spadchyna will establish the Brest region office of the People’s Boycott.

Our goal is to fight the farce of election and usurpation of the power and to protect the constitutional rights of the people of Belarus.”
