Philipp Mißfelder demanded the immediate release of the political prisoner.

Foreign Policy Spokesman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group and Federal Chairman of the Junge Union stated about the new sentence of Zmitser Dashkevich.

“With great disappointment I received the news regarding the extension of Zmitser Dashkevic’s prison sentence, whose god parenthood I accepted over a year ago.

Mr. Dashkevich is the Chairman of the Youth Organization “Malady Front” (Youth Front) which is committed to a future for the rule of law and democracy in Belarus. He is one example of several politically dedicated youths that wish freedom for their people after years of dictatorship. Their commitment risks arbitrary punishment and bullying from the government and thereby deserves strong recognition and solidarity.

The government of Alexander Lukashenka must finally release Zmitser Dashkevich and end the practice of politically motivated imprisonments. The recent rail sentence extension is completely unacceptable. The events in Belarus show that freedom of opinion and assembly are unfortunately not guaranteed to all people in Europe. I will always remind the government in Minsk that no political motive can ever permit a disregard for human rights,” - Philipp Mißfelder said.

Belarusian and international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International und Libereco – Partnership for Human Rights, consider Zmitser Dashkevich a prisoner of conscience and demand his immediate and unconditional release.
