Yermoshina demands to toughen the law about «elections»

Chairperson of Belarusian Central Election Commission said the laws are not strict enough.

The supporters of the elections boycott demonstrated that Belarus’ election law gives opportunity of its liberal interpretation, as the Chairperson of Belarusian Central Election Commission Lidia Yermoshina stated on TV channel “Belarus 1”. “Those, who don’t want to participate in the elections, who want to scuttle the elections, demonstrated that we have to improve the law, to make it stricter. As it turns out, democracy is no good for everyone,” she said.

According to her, during the election campaign the CEC had to additionally explain the application of the Elections Code’s regulations with regard to debates. Thus, some of the candidates registered as trustees of other candidates and participated in the debates several times, as BelTA reports.

Lidia Yermoshina noted that she is preparing a number of recommendations on the amendment of the election law, including the election campaign issues. She said that candidates should have more opportunities for running election campaign, and that static forms of the election campaign should be changed to discussions. Other forms of the participations in the elections also require amendments, including nominations of candidates.
