Issue of Baumgertner's extradition to be solved “soon”

The procedure of the extradition of Uralkali Ceo Vladislav Baumgertner to Russia is under way. The problem will be solved in the near future.

The statement was made by Belarusian foreign minister Uladzimir Makei.

“Our law-enforcement bodies and general prosecutor's offices are carrying out the necessary interstate procedures to extradite this person. As for the precise date of the extradition, I cannot say it, but as far as I know all formal procedures have been completed and only a few minor things are left to be done,” Makei said at a press conference in Moscow answering a question of Interfax news agency.

“I am confident the problem will soon be solved completely in a lawful manner,” he said.

Makei noted that the parties agreed at a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov that such private issues would not have a negative impact on the cooperation between the two countries.

Baumgertner was detained in Minsk on August 26. A criminal case was opened against him. Belarusian prosecutor general Aliaksandr Kaniuk said on November 14 that the extradition of Baumgertner to Russia was possible.
