Congratulation postcards do not get delivered for Mikalaj Statkievich in prison

The administration of Mahilou prison did not pass the political prisoner hundreds congratulations on his birthday.

The charter97.org web-site learnt about that from Maryna Adamovich, Mikalaj Statkievich’s wife.

“Many people sent him the congratulations two weeks before the birthday. Already ten days ago via the FreedomX2 web-site, created by a MEP Marek Migalski, around 950 postcards were sent. I am not even speaking of a large number of the acquaintances of mine, who wrote to him. At the same time, for what I have learnt, apart from my letter Mikalaj Statkievich only got two congratulations. I think that the administration of the prison wants to create an impression that he has been left by everyone”, - Maryna Adamovich.

Mikalaj Statkievich’s spouse also told that he husband received another punishment on the eve of his birthday.

“Pressure has resumed on him again. Another reprimand has been made. But the most important thing that worries me is that he was not provided with the necessary medical assistance. First of all it surprises me that he needed one. Secondly, it is not clear why they did not provide the medical assistance”, - the political prisoner’s wife said.

We would remind that today Mikalaj Statkievich has turned 57. He was arrested after a mass protest manifestation against the rigged presidential elections on 19 December 2010. Over 700 participants were arrested then, including presidential candidates Andrei Sannikov, Uladzimir Niakliaeu, Ales Michalevic and the members of their electoral teams.

On 26 May 2011 the politician was sentenced to 6 years in high security prison by the court of Minsk’s Partisan district. Last year the conditions have been toughened for him – from a penal colony number 17 in Shklou he has been transferred to the prison number 4 in Mahilou.

One of the latest letters from the politician was confiscated by the prosecutor’s office. As it became known later, in the letter the politician wrote that political prisoners were threatened with being raped behind bars.
