Ice Hockey World Championship to be insured for €60mn

The Ice Hockey World Championship that is due to be held in Minsk will be insured in a Belarusian company.

The IIHF World Championship in Minsk scheduled for May 2014 can be insured for 60 million euros, chairman of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation Yauheny Vorsin said at a press conference, BelaPAN news agency reports.

“One of the requirement of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is insuring the championship against the possibility of cancellation, postponement, boycott or force majeure events, etc. The second type of insurance is liability insurance. We are considering an insurance sum of 60 million euros in the first variant. I'd like to emphasise that we are still discussing it. As for the liability insurance, we plan that every visitor of the championship will be insured for about 50 thousand euros,” Vorsin said.

The head of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation said the IIHF gave Belarus the right to insure the tournament in a Belarusian company.

Lukashenka ordered to insure the world championship against losses in case of cancellation, boycott or postponement of the event.

Amendments to decree No. 28 of January 16, 2012, “On certain issues on holding the 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship in Minsk” were signed by Lukashenka on September 13.

Human rights group and international organisations stand against holding the championship in Belarus due to human rights violations and political prisoners in the country. The idea to move the tournament to another country was supported by many European and American politicians. Some countries threatened to boycott the championship in Minsk if the Belarusian authorities don't stop repression.
