Obama: Security of Eastern Europe is sacred duty of US

The US considers the defence of Eastern Europe its sacred duty.

Our commitment to Poland's security as well as the security of our allies in Central and Eastern Europe is a cornerstone of our own security and it is sacrosanct, Barack Obama said June 3 in Warsaw in the presence of Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.

An UNIAN correspondent reports from Warsaw that the American president began his visit with a meeting with Polish and American pilots of F-16 fighter jets at Warsaw Chopin Airport, where Polish president Bronislaw Komorowski had met him.

Obama is expected to hold talks with Komorowski and the head of the Polish government Donald Tusk as well as to meet with the presidents of central and eastern European countries.

Obama does not plan to attend the ceremony of awarding leader of the Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemilev with the Solidarity Prize established by Poland on the 25th anniversary of overthrowing the communist regime in the country. US Secretary of State John Kerry will represent Obama at the event.

Obama is expected to attend a dinner in the evening.

Tomorrow, June 4, Obama will attend the main events on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Polish first free election that took place on June 4, 1989.

Poland is the first country Obama visits during his European tour. He also plans to visit Belgium to attend a G7 Summit and France to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

Petro Poroshenko, the winner of the Ukrainian presidential race, is expected attend the celebrations in Poland and meet with US president Barack Obama.

Komorowski's advisor Roman Kuźniar says the issue of Ukraine will be the main topic the Polish president is going to discuss with Barack Obama and other leaders.
