Foreign Voyages of Lukashenka Drive to a Drop in Exports

32

The Belarusian dictator visits countries of marginal value for the Belarusian economy.

Political scientist Ryhory Astapenya noticed a strange connection between foreign voyages of the leader of Belarus and collapses in the Belarusian exports to countries Aliaksandr Lukashenka has visited.

"The Belarusian export has dropped in most countries Lukashenka went to. The results of January-May 2016 (compared with the same period 2015) prove that the Belarusian exports slightly declined in three of 12 cases and in 6 it collapsed. The leading position goes to China, the "strategic partner" the Belarusian government so much relies on. In the first five months Belarus sold goods equaled to $76 million, or almost five times less than in January-May of 2015", expert writes on ideaby.org.

The official statistics is the best proof.

According to the expert, Lukashenka believes in "traditional trade based on equal terms." "It does not work in reality, because after a meeting with Aliaksandr Lukashenka no one wants to buy MAZs," Astapenya assures.

"Aside from the meeting of the "Normandy Four" in Minsk and the visit to the United States (Lukashenka delivered an address in the UN), within the year the Belarusian leader met with 12 presidents or prime ministers, and in 9 cases out of 12 he failed. The collapse in trade with China was the most highly charged. According to the official statistics, in the first 5 months of 2016 exports to that country fell in 5 times. First of all it relates to Belarus' failure to sign a contract on potash deliveries to China," Ryhory Astapenya noted in the conversation with Belsat.

The mini-research shows that Aliaksandr Lukashenka is "not a black mark for the Belarusian export." In 2016 Belarus sold more goods to Georgia (138.6%) and Turkmenistan (141.3%). Exports to Pakistan insignificantly increased by 2.3%. But…

"These countries are of marginal importance in the global economy and are not able to replace China", Astapenya explains.

According to the expert, the decline of the Belarusian exports is associated with a reduction in the competitiveness of Belarusian enterprises.

"The Minsk Automobile Plant which is losing its ground in the Russian market is a good example. Chinese and Japanese producers come to the market and in the result Belarus has no consumer," the expert sums up.
