The Russian Orthodox Church does not want to discuss the issue of the conservation of the monument to Uladzimir Karatkevich in Vitsebsk.

On October 26, Vitsebsk residents gathered near the monument to Uladzimir Karatkevich to sign an appeal to Lukashenka, who had set the seal to build an analog of the Polatsk St. Sophia Cathedral in the park of Partisan Glory.

People claim that the construction involves the destruction of the Vitsebsk historic area, and offer to build the cathedral somewhere else. There were around a hundred of protesters. The future senior priest of the cathedral father Mikhail and the senior priest of the church of the Annunciation came as well, Vitsebsk regional coordinator of the Organizing Committee of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party Tatsiana Seviarynets informed the site bchd.info.

“The conversation was chaotic and uneasy. In addition, people understand that the Russian Orthodox Church covers up the Russian World activity in Vitsebsk region, so there were even shouts like “Suitcase-Station-Russia.” Though father Mikhail was trying hard to assure the residents, that the park would not suffer, and would become a more beautiful, even blessed place, the people did not believe him and expressed their distrust. So neither of us gained anything from that discussion, during which the priests had to hear a lot of accusations towards the Orthodox Church,” – she said.
