Germany demands harsh reaction from EU to Belarus events

The federal government of Germany will confront Belarusian authorities over the rigged election results and is set to arouse the European Union to make a clear political response to the events.

It has been stated by German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle an interview to Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS) newspaper.

“The repression of freedom is not acceptable," Westerwelle said.

“We will insist that there is a clear political response from the EU to the interference with the election in Minsk,” Westerwelle stressed.

As reported by FAS, Berlin is to push for harsh response from the EU together with the Polish government.

“Germany is on the side of all those who want freedom and democracy in Belarus,” Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert told the same newspaper. Seibert said that the force used by LukashenkA's government had made a mockery of the rule of law.

“Our requirement is clear: He must free the political prisoners,” Seibert said.
