Germany suggests imposing embargo on oil products export from Belarus

This initiative was suggested by Philipp Mißfelder, a member of the Bundestag.

The European Union has tightened sanctions on Belarus, Spiegel-Online reports today, but Philipp Mißfelder, a CDU member in German Bundestag, who is responsible for foreign affairs in the fraction, thinks this is not enough. He demands imposing economic embargo and thinks this measure can support the Belarusian opposition.

Mißfelder insists on stronger economic pressure on dictator Lukashenka. As export of oil products is vital for Belarus, embargo can shake such a system as the Belarusian one,” he told Spiegel correspondent Andreas Niesmann.

Mißfelder also touched in the interview upon a common approach of the EU to Belarus. “If we do not to it now, one should stop philosophizing on the EU common foreign policy.”

Besides, he insists on closer cooperation with the United States and Russia on this issue. Even if Russia and Europe do not have the same aims on different points, Moscow cannot ignore the situation in its neighbouring country, he thinks. “The Kremlin does not want to have a second North Korea in its backyard,” the politician is convinced.
