Shutting down “Narodnaya Volya”: private session of the court

The court gathers today for a private session in the case of closing “Narodnaya Volya” newspaper.

The complaint was filed in accordance with item 2.2 of article 51 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus on Mass Media. Under the document, a governmental body responsible for mass media can bring a suit to stop publishing a mass media outlet if it has received two or more written warnings in the course of the year.

The paper’s editor-in-chief, Iosif Syaredzich, thinks that the warnings to “Narodnaya Volya” received from the authorities during the year were not a ground for such a strict punishment of the newspaper and its numerous readers.
