Bishkek will seek the extradition of Bakiyevs through international organizations

Kyrgyzstan will demand the extradition of Kurmanbek Bakiyev and his brother Zhanybek hiding in Belarus, with help of international organizations.

Zhanysh Bakiyev’s extradition to Kyrgyzstan depends on Belarus’s response,” the Spokesman for the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry, Nurzhigit Kadyrbekov, said today at the briefing.

According him, on August 21, the Ministry sent a note verbale about Zhanysh Bakiyev to Belarus. “According to the Minsk Convention, if a citizen is accused of grave crimes he must be extradited. On August 23, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry made the statement but Belarus didn’t respond. Whereupon, on August 24, the Kyrgyz Ambassador Erik Asanaliev was recalled for consultations from Belarus,” said Nurzhigit Kadyrbekov.

He noted that consultations are about further relationships between Kyrgyzstan and Belarus. “One cannot say about complications but everything depends on Belarus’s response here. The note verbale is a serious document in diplomacy and it should cause a reaction,” said the Spokesman.

“In case of no response Kyrgyzstan will act under the international law in order to strive for Zhanysh Bakiyev’s extradition,” he concluded.
