Democrats To Prepare Common List Of Candidates For “Elections”

The opposition intends to coordinate actions at the “parliamentary elections” on September 11.

It was discussed at a meeting of the stating council of the democratic institutions in Minsk on April 27, BelaPAN was told by the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Liabedzka.

“We have to work out the proposal, to decide, how we can form a common list of potential candidates. The majority voted for the center-right coalition’s proposal, so the list is to be prepared, – the politician said. Liabedzka noted that a common list did not mean that there would be 110 potential candidates, one for each constituency.

“There might be more, but we need to work out a mechanism of coordination and cooperation. If it is adopted, it will be a good result just before the election campaign,” – he said. Liabedzka also said that “all the council members take a stand for a common message.”

“If possible, we will nominate a single candidate for election, if not – we will urge regional leaders to work together in the same campaign. Since Belarus does not have free and democratic elections, there is no obstacle to co-operate, not to compete with each other and to protect citizens from the arbitrariness of the authorities together,” – co-chair of the organizing committee of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party Vital Rymasheuski said.

The next meeting of Council will be held on May 3. It is planned to considerregulation of its activity among other things.

The decision to create a stating council of the democratic institutions was taken in Minsk on April 15, by representatives of the United Civil Party, the Belarusian Popular Front, the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), the Belarusian Left Party Fair World, the movement For Freedom, the campaign European Belarus, the solidarity movement Razam, the independent trade union the REI, the organizing committee of the party Belarusian Christian Democracy, the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Narodnaya Hramada. Later this decision was supported by the organizing committees of the party Belaruski Ruh, the Workers' Party, the Party of Women Nadzeya and the Party of Freedom and Progress.
